It’s not easy to go against the crowd. No one finds it to be a less strenuous swim when going against the current. But how do you go against turbulent waters without getting carried away?
- You need to determine God’s will. Sometimes people will try to fight against obstacles that God has placed in their way to prevent them from getting out of his will. This is not only senseless as it will only frustrate you, but also dangerous because you will be trying to break out of God’s ultimate protection and blessing. There are times when you should not fight the current, but rather let the river of God take you where it will. But then there are times when the Lord will speak to you to do something while everyone else will be screaming for you to do just the opposite. This is when God would have you to face the crowd and start swimming.
- Rely on his strength and wisdom throughout the swim. God is a vast source of strength. He is our stronghold in times of trouble. Staying in his strength will allow him to push you through the resistance that you will come against. People may still be talking, but their remarks just roll off of you. They don’t sting as they did when you took all the hits yourself. But some things may still come your way that demand mid-course corrections. This is why it becomes so important to stay in contact with God’s wisdom. He will be that voice of correction and confidence; that feeling of peace and reassurance.
- Keep the faith. God did not lead you out into the waters to watch you sink. He knows that you have what it takes to cross this river; to stand against the crowds; to follow after his will. Just as the children of Israel had to rely on God to cross the Jordan into the promised land, so you must learn to trust God’s timing and direction to reach the promise he has given you.

This is a tough thing to do. It’s especially hard to do something on your own when it’s your family members are telling you something differerent. I can’t help but think about Abraham who left everything to go to the unknown. It’s the unknown places that are the scariest, but that’s when we have full trust in God alone!!
