How is life right now? Have you ended up where you thought you would be at this point in your life? Many of us set up goals in our heart that we don’t necessarily let everyone know about. We want to be married for 60 years. We want loving, obedient kids. We want to be making X amount of money, and be living in THAT house. Isn’t it strange how life turns out so different from the way you planned it?
Life sometimes changes course without warning. Sometimes it happens as a result of our own damaging decisions. Other times it was because someone else made a decision that took our dream and smashed it into pieces. You don’t want to be in this position, but here you stand. Now what?
2 Samuel 6:13 tells us of King David’s reaction to one of these unexpected changes in his life’s course. He had gone from the beloved hero of Israel when he killed Goliath, to the most controversial man of his day. He was surrounded by zealots who were willing to kill those who they perceived to be David’s enemies, to make him king of Israel. Some of these men they killed were David’s good friends. Things for a time seemed to be spiraling out of control. He wanted to take the Arc of the Covenant, a symbol of God’s presence, into his city of Jerusalem, but God would not have it for the time being.
Scripture doesn’t connect the dots for this next part, but if I were David, I would probably be rolling around in self pity. “Why God can’t things just be easy and simple? Everything is so hard in life. Even when I try to do the right thing, it finds some way of falling apart.” I’m just speculating on this part because verse 12 reveals that once David heard how much Obed-edom had been blessed since God’s presence (the arc) had come to his house, David decided to get up and go get the arc to bring it into the Kingdom’s capital city.
Verse 13-14 “And when those who bore the ark of the Lord had gone six steps, he sacrificed an ox and a fattened animal. And David danced before the Lord with all his might…”
David had been uncertain about his life so far. Was this really what God wanted him to do? Was he cursed because of past decisions? All of this was answered when he encountered God’s presence. When he and God moved in the same direction, those first six steps towards his destiny got him so excited that he broke out into dancing.
Can you see where you’ve been taking steps with God lately? Maybe even the fact that you’ve read this post through the very end is a sign that your heart is to walk with God and not down the road you’ve been traveling. Invite his presence into your life right now and uncertainty will begin to vanish. Fear will begin to dissipate. Step by every small step, you’ll get your life back on track. God will make it better than your greatest dream! So go ahead, begin celebrating the steps you’ve already began taking in the right direction!
