Daniel had been taken from his family and taken to the King’s palace. He was educated, birthed into a noble Jewish family, a prime candidate to be an advisor to the King. Yet he had to prove himself first before he stood before the King. He was already very handsome, but only the most physically fit and wisest could make a career of advising royalty.
His Highness had instructed his servants to feed all of the prospects the same food that the King himself would eat everyday for a year. To be sure this included the best cuts of meat and the choicest wine the kingdom could offer. All Daniel had to do was go with the flow. Instead, he followed a gentle nudge in his spirit. He got the idea that eating this food would “defile” himself, so he asked the King’s servant if he could just eat veggies and drink water. The servant, not wanting to chance anything with the King hesitated. Daniel struck a deal in essence saying, “Take ten days and see if the appearance of my friends and I are not better than the appearance of the other. Then you be the judge.”
The servant agreed, and after ten days Daniel and his friends were seen to be better in appearance and fatter than those who ate the King’s food. Logically, this would make no sense. But spiritually, it becomes the first key in walking in the Spirit:
“Flesh passes judgement based on appearance, but people of the spirit are led by the gentle prodding of the Holy Spirit.”
The Holy Spirit is part of the trinity, partnering with the Father and the Son. He (an actual person) is the current bridge of fellowship that we share with the Father. He can be with and commune with us thanks to what Jesus did in revealing the Father’s righteousness during his life, death, and resurrection. Jesus will be coming back again one day to call his true followers to an eternal reward in an actual place called heaven, and to judge the others righteously to an eternal torment in hell. Until that day, we have the honor of being able to walk with the Holy Spirit.
He really wants to help you in your daily tasks. He understands the level of desire you have to fellowship with him. If you choose not to invite him into your day, he will not force himself on you. I on the other hand have chosen to walk with him daily. One of the first lessons I have learned about him is that he sees things that I don’t always see. Because he is God, he knows the future, and sees beyond the face value of people and situations. His wisdom in my decision making has been priceless. The times when I tried to ignore his gentle nudges, I have paid a heavy price. Just because someone tells you something does not make it true. It could be a show that they have mastered, a grand masquerade for all to see–but the Holy Spirit sees their heart which cannot be masked. Learn to trust Him. Don’t be afraid to question the way things look. Many times the right decision may end up being the one option you hadn’t thought of, but the Holy Spirit knew about already.
